Stories of Our God
Morning Prayer: Weekdays in Advent at 9am (December 4-8, 11-15, and 18-22)
Knowing scripture is the surest marker of deepening faith in God in Christ. One of the ways that Christian communities have explored the stories of the Bible is through observance of hours of prayer and scripture that punctuate the day. So, every weekday this Advent, we will be offering Morning Prayer at 9am. The service will be simple, brief, and will allow us to hear large portions of holy scripture set aside through the Daily Office readings.
Festival of Lessons and Carols: Sunday, December 17 at 4pm
Lessons and Carols was first celebrated in 1880 in a wooden shed in Truro, England. Beginning in 1928, Minnesota Public Radio helped make the service popular in the United States, as tens of thousands of people tuned in each year on Christmas Eve to listen the live broadcasts from Cambridge. The service has been offered at St. John’s for many years. Our handbell, adult, youth, and children’s choirs, joined by the Artaria String Quartet, share their talents and lovely seasonal music. Whenever and wherever this service is heard, the main theme is the purposes of our Creator as seen through the lens and texts of scripture.
Stories of Faith Formation
“Into the Unknown”: Sundays at 9am, November 5-December 17 (no meeting November 26 due to Thanksgiving)
Explore the stories of the ordinary, extraordinary men and women of the Bible, including Ruth and Naomi, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Mary. What do they reveal to us about our own stories? Gather for a brief lecture or teaching, followed by discussion and illumination. Youth and adults welcome.
Advent Wreath Event: Sunday, December 3 at 11am
All ages are invited! We will make advent wreaths together and prepare ourselves for the birth of Christ. All materials provided. Refreshments will be served. You can also pick up the booklet of parishioner profiles for our all-parish Advent read. To ensure enough supplies, RSVP to Jean Hansen at firstname.lastname@example.org by November 26. Let her know if you can bring your wreath ring from last year or if you need a ring.
Advent Treasure Hunt: Sundays in Advent
What do the stained glass windows and the Crèche figures teach us about the Nativity Story? Look for the figures each Sunday as they move around the church from one stained glass window to another. Learn more about the key people and animals in the “Advent Story” brochure that will be handed out the first Sunday in Advent.

Stories of Our Neighbors In Need
YWCA Giving Tree: through December 13
Help families transitioning out of homelessness with donations of Christmas gifts. We will have Christmas trees at the back of the church and in the Gathering Space with tags containing wishes for 15 families. Choose the tag(s) you’d like to fulfill. You do not need to purchase everything on the tag; the usual amount spent is $30-50, but please participate at whatever level you feel comfortable. Leave the unwrapped gifts in the marked bins in the Gathering Space. The YWCA is also asking for donations of wrapping paper and gift bags.
