Music Director — St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, St. Paul, Minnesota
Saint John the Evangelist Episcopal Church seeks a dynamic, spiritually grounded, collaborative, faithful and gifted leader for the position of Music Director. The person called to this position will serve as organist, director of the adult choir and bell choir, supervisor of children’s and youth programs, and liturgical music planner and coordinator. More than this, the Music Director functions as a spiritual and pastoral leader in our faith community, helping us make music and helping us create community. This position reports to the Rector and works collaboratively with multiple commissions and teams including the staff and volunteers of Saint John’s. The Music Director position is three-quarter to full-time, contingent on the candidate’s training and experience.
St. John the Evangelist is a thriving and increasingly diverse Episcopal parish in an historic urban neighborhood in the heart of St. Paul with over 400 members and growing. We enjoy being together in community – both in worship, service, and fellowship. We are, as we say every week in the collect for St. John’s, being built up “in the knowledge and love of God.” Music helps build us up, both as a part of the liturgy and, as such, a part of the spiritual life of our whole faith community. For nearly 130 years we have been “the church of the open door” seeing to the spiritual needs of our faith community and reaching out to our neighborhood and the world, serving God in all people. We have a commitment to social justice and believe our faith community should serve as a place for reconciliation both with God and our neighbor. Music at St. John’s is much more than a program, and as such it engages people of all ages in a wide range of musical possibilities: congregational singing, adult choir, youth choir, children’s music, handbell choir, and an instrumental ensemble. The music we sing and play comes from our Anglican/Episcopal Church tradition and is also drawn from across the range of Christian/sacred music repertoire. We seek to continue liturgy and music that maintains our current standard of excellence while also exploring other more contemporary, contemplative, or multicultural musical repertoire. We believe that in the context of the church music is, first and foremost, an act of prayer. As such, it is an integral part of our spiritual practice and habit as a faith community.
The organ, an historic four manual E.M. Skinner instrument, was restored in 2008 by Schantz Organ Company and now has 55 ranks and 3,455 pipes in six divisions. Saint John’s also owns three different pianos including a Steinway (in the worship space), handbells, and a number of other instruments.

The Music Director develops and leads music and has oversight of the music program at St. John’s and is an integral leader in the liturgical life of the parish. This work is consistent with our mission, values, and theology. While liturgy and music are canonically the responsibility of the rector, guidance and leadership of the parish music is entrusted to the Music Director and is done in collaboration with the clergy and in consultation with the Music Commission, other music staff, and liturgical leaders of the parish.

- Understanding of how music serves the liturgy and how it is an integral part of the spiritual life of a faith community;
- Interest in all ages and abilities, including interest in working with youth and children;

- Can work with a diverse team, representing many abilities & backgrounds;
- Passion for following the way of Jesus & helping others do the same through music and liturgy.
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
Worship and Music Planning
- Play the organ for both Sunday services and other services in the church year
- Direct the adult choir in all rehearsals and services
- Present Evensongs, four to five a year, including Lessons and Carols
- Prepare and present major choral works as part of Evensong
- Rehearse and direct orchestra ensembles
- Accompany and/or rehearse other music groups in the church as needed
- Prepare all music for Sunday and other weekly services, including psalms, hymns, anthems, and preludes and postludes
- Arrange annual choir retreat and regular rehearsals
- Assist with preparation for collaborative worship and outreach in the community
- Preserve, maintain, and develop the parish music library
- Hire and supervise all parish musicians: choir section leaders; choral scholars, youth/children choir director; and hand bell choir director
- Responsible for the creation of weekly 10 AM Sunday and special service bulletins
- Arrange for hiring other musicians as needed
- Manage music budget and participate in music program fundraising
- Supervise and arrange for maintenance of all parish instruments: organ, pianos, hand bells, tower bells, etc.
- Facilitate and oversee use of worship space and organ by outside groups
- Publicize all Evensongs, Lessons and Carols, and other worship/music events
- Demonstrated excellence as organist, choral conductor, and orchestral conductor
- Trained in music, liturgy, and worship practices
- Experience in the musical and liturgical traditions of the Episcopal church
- Proven experience with growing a program
- Able to manage budgets, funds, and financial details
- Competence as a supervisor, coach, and mentor of others in parish music programs
- Develop St. John’s as a musical entity for all age groups while integrating music into the worship and life of the parish
- Act as supportive colleague to all staff and leadership
- Demonstrate creativity and innovation — integrate any number of music possibilities into parish life and worship and be inclusive of all musical talents in the parish
- Be knowledgeable, welcoming, and friendly
