The congregation of St. John the Evangelist has been located in its current neighborhood since 1881. The church is located in the neighborhood, now known as the Hill Historic District, and is one block off of Summit Avenue. The original St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church was dedicated on July 29, 1881. The original building was expanded in 1902 and the design of the current building was done by a local architect, Clarence Johnston, who consulted with Cass Gilbert, the architect of the state capitol and other noteworthy Minnesota landmarks.
The church has numerous architectural features, but its legacy is in the history of its role in the neighborhood. Known as the “Church of the Open Door” since 1881, [more information to come]
