Worship and Music

Holy Week Morning Eucharist April 10-14
Eucharist at 7:30am in the Chapel with homilies by residents of Circle of the Beloved.

No Sung Compline This Week
There will be no service of Sung Compline on Maundy Thursday, April 13.

Maundy Thursday | Thursday, April 13
Worship at 7pm with foot washing and stripping of the altar, followed by overnight vigil.

Good FridayFriday, April 14
Worship at 12 noon and 7pm. The noon service will have a liturgical procession of the Stations of the Cross, followed by communion from the reserve sacrament. The 7pm service will have communion from the reserve sacrament and veneration of the cross.

Easter VigilSaturday, April 15
Meet at the back of the church at the beginning of the 7pm service for the lighting of the new fire. Bring bells and instruments; after the reading of our salvation history, we will ring and play to celebrate the arrival of Easter. A reception follows in the Fireside Room.

Easter Sunday Sunday, April 16
Worship services at 8 am and 10 am. The 10 am service will be a festal Eucharist with timpani and trumpet, accompanied by the Artaria string quartet.

Guest Choir Sunday, April 23
At 10am worship, we will welcome the Grace Cathedral Choristers of Topeka, KS.

Noonday Prayers Wednesday, April 26
Everyone is invited to join us at 12 noon in the chapel for a service of Noonday Prayers.

Artaria Chamber Music School Concert |  Friday, April 28
Student quartets will perform their Spring Concert at 7pm. A festive reception follows.

“The Creation”: A Rock Cantata | Sunday, April 30
The Liturgy of the Word will be carried to us in part by the Youth Choir, who will be presenting “The Creation” during the 10am service. This beautiful and spirited cantata is contemporary in theme, with text from Genesis taking a journey through of the first 7 days of Creation. Our youth will be assisted by the Lay Clerks as the “backup singers” and accompanied by drums, electric guitar, bass, and piano.

Spiritual Life

Chapel Vigil | Thursday, Apr 13-Friday, Apr 14
At the end of the Maundy Thursday service, we will reserve the remaining consecrated communion in the Chapel of the Beloved Disciple. We invite parishioners to take shifts keeping vigil with the body of Christ, from 8pm to 7am the next morning. Sign up at by calling the church office at 651-228-1172 x10.

Reception, Reaffirmation, and Adult Confirmation | Sunday, April 30
If you were confirmed in another denomination, you can be received into the Episcopal Church. If you are already a confirmed or received member, you may want to participate in the Rite of Reaffirmation and recommit publicly to the Christian life. Contact Jered Weber-Johnson at 651-228-1172 x11.  The next service of Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation will take place April 30 at 2pm at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Minneapolis.

Healing Prayer StationThe Last Sunday of Each Month
Beginning April 30, we will have a prayer station in the baptistry area after the Eucharist on the last Sunday of each month. Should you have a need of healing, for yourself, another person, or the world, consider coming to pray together. We welcome you in the name of Christ. Contact Kate Bradtmiller at with questions.

God is Love: A Pre-TEC Retreat | May 5-6
Our activities are uniquely designed for Middle Schoolers. Youth feel welcomed, make new friends, play games, and start to learn from their high school peer leaders about how their faith can impact their daily life. Middle school participants, high school leaders, and adult chaperones can register or learn more at

Youth Summer Camps
The Episcopal Church in Minnesota is offering three camps this year: Episcopal Youth Quest Camp for grades 6-8 (and for grades 9-12 leadership) on July 23-29; Episcopal Creative Arts Day Camp for age 4—grade 6 on July 24-28; and Episcopal Youth Music Camp for grades 3-12 on Aug 6-12. Feasting on the Word  Sundays at 9am
Join us in the Fireside Room Sundays at 9am for a Bible study with a more “historical-critical” approach to the lectionary text. For more info, contact Jered Weber-Johnson at 651-228-1172 x11. Feasting on the Word will not meet Easter Sunday.

St. John’s Café   Sundays at 9am
Join us in the Meditation Room Sundays at 9am for a clergy-led discussion around the weekly gospel reading, current events, and happenings in our personal lives. For more info, contact Kate Bradtmiller at 651-228-1172 x18. Café will not meet Easter Sunday.

Basics Classes | Sundays at 11:30am
New members, those preparing for a sacrament, and anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge, join us for this 8-week series about the basics of Christianity, Anglicanism, the Bible, and discipleship. The class meets Sundays at 11:30am in the Fireside Room. Lunch is served. RSVP to Lea Anne Schmidt at


Giving Opportunities

Easter Flower Memorial Donations
Honor a family member or give in memory of a departed loved one with a gift towards the cost of the Easter Garden. The names all those honored will listed be in the Easter bulletins. Green flower donation envelopes can be found in the pews.

Evangelist PreparationThursday, April 20
Join us in the Fireside Room any time between 9 am and 12 noon to help assemble the Evangelist magazine mailing. Training, fellowship, coffee, and donuts provided. For more information, contact Sarah Dull at

Volunteers Needed to serve at First Nations Kitchen (FNK) Sunday, April 23
Serving at FNK gives each of us an opportunity to fulfill our calling to be in relationship with our neighbors. We have four shifts to staff:
•  Food prep:  1:30-3:30pm (6 volunteers)
•  Dining room setup: 4:00-5:00pm (3 volunteers including one dishwasher)
•  Dinner service: 5:00-6:30pm (8-10 volunteers)
•  Cleanup: 6:15-7:30pm (6 volunteers)

Pack the Pews Sunday | Sunday, May 7
Bring your gifts of nonperishable food items to church on May 7 for the “Pack the Pews Sunday” food drive. Our Mustard Seed Offering that morning will go towards our local Hallie Q. Brown Food Shelf.


Special Interests

Office Closed | Monday, April 17
The church office will be closed April 17 for Easter Monday.

Stations of the Cross Art Exhibits  | April 2-30
Fourteen drawings by Helen Boyer are in the church, with a companion booklet at the baptismal font. A suggested pathway for the Stations is provided and can be followed anytime the church is open and available. Sarah Stengle’s art exhibit on the Stations of the Cross and “singing” drawings is in the Gallery (the hallway outside the Fireside Room).

Liberian Episcopal Community Eucharist | Friday, April 21
The 12th Gathering of the Liberian Episcopal Community USA (LECUSA) will be April
21-23. They formally invite you to the opening Eucharist at 7pm April 21 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, with Bishop Prior as celebrant and preacher. Our St. John’s Mustard Seed offering on April 23 will go to LECUSA and their support of Ebola orphans.

OWLs Luncheon  Wednesday, April 26
All OWLs (everyone who identifies as Older, Wiser Laity) are invited to a luncheon hosted by St. John’s clergy and staff following Noonday Prayers. Join us for Helen Boyer sharing her journey of becoming a Benedictine monastic. RSVP to the office at 651-228-1172 x10.

Cabaret | Saturday, April 29
Entertainment, fellowship, complementary refreshments, free admission, and silent & live auctions. This event benefits Kayoro Clinic and the Youth Pilgrimage.

Capital City Grief Coalition | Thursdays
This group meets in the Gathering Space from 5:30-7pm. They provide education and support for those grieving the death of a loved one. Each meeting has a speaker, followed by small groups for sharing.  Contact Lois Knutson at 651-227-4430 with questions.

Ordination of Craig Lemming | Tues, June 27
Save the date for the ordination to the priesthood of the Rev. Craig Lemming at St. Mark’s Cathedral (time TBA). An informal collection is being taken up to help offset the costs of bringing Craig’s family from Zimbabwe for his ordination. If you would like to help, please send a check payable to St. John’s with “Craig Ordination” in the memo.
