Evensong, or evening prayer, is a traditional service in the late afternoon or early evening. The service celebrates the incarnation of Christ in a rich combination of Scripture, prayer, and music that has proved an enduring framework for moving liturgy. At Saint John’s, a brief musical concert follows the conclusion of the service.
Evensong services at Saint John’s are supported by generous contributions to the Winifred Bean Evensong Fund. The Bean Fund was established by Howard Don Small, former Saint John’s organist, in memory of Winifred Bean, Episcopalian philanthropist and supporter of sacred music.
Over the years the fund has made it possible to present performances of such works as the Requiems of Fauré, Brahms and Duruflé, and works by Handel, Bach and Mozart, among many others, often with orchestra.
The Evensong Fund keeps alive the memory of Winifred and Atherton Bean and their countless contributions to the cultural and civic life of Minnesota. You too have the opportunity to contribute to the Bean Fund and support the evensong series at Saint John’s.
