At St. John’s, we believe studying the Bible with others is an important spiritual practice. The fundamental idea of the Bible as “the Word of God” is not that God dictated the words of Scripture into the ears of the writers, but that these texts are the ones through which God’s people have most consistently heard God speaking to them.
Reading the Bible with others is the way the church (and the synagogue) has historically experienced scripture. When we read together, our collective wisdom, knowledge, and insight can help clear the fog of confusion and restrain us from reading in ways that are self-justifying.
This Sunday, March 9 at 11:30am, we begin a six-week Bible Discovery Series led by Dr Judy Stack. Grab some refreshments from coffee hour and meet in the Fireside Room. In this series we will cover the whole Bible, Genesis to Revelation, through a mix of big-picture overview and interactively digging into short passages. These sessions will prepare you to more fruitfully read the Bible on your own or as part of a study group. Whether you feel like you don’t know much about the Bible or have loved to study it for many years, this group has something for you!
