Many of you recently received the Bean Fund’s annual appeal, inviting you to support and participate in St. John’s Evensong services. Evensong services at St. John’s are supported by generous contributions to the Winifred Bean Memorial Evensong Fund. The Bean Fund was established by Howard Don Small, former St. John’s organist, in memory of Winifred Bean, an Episcopalian philanthropist and supporter of sacred music. Contributions to the Bean Fund has made it possible for St. John’s to present performances of works by Faure, Brahms, Durufle, Handel, Bach, and Mozart, among many others, often with an orchestra. Your contributions go directly toward hiring orchestral musicians, guest organists and singers, as well as purchasing musical scores and other things we need to present Evensong services.
Importantly, the Bean Fund also keeps alive the memory and legacy of Winifred and Atherton Bean and their many contributions to Minnesota’s cultural and civic life. With a tax deductible donation, you too can be part of the Evensong tradition at St. John’s. Donation forms are available at Evensong receptions, or you can simply write “Bean Fund” in the memo line of your check or on your donation envelope.
Our next Evensong is March 16, 2014 at 4:00 pm
The choir is preparing several anthems and canticles by British composer Herbert Howells for the March Lenten Evensong. The Magnificat and Nunc dimittis they will sing were originally commissioned for use by the Royal Family at their “royal peculiars” at Westminster Abbey and St. George’s Chapel at Windsor.
