Faith Formation for Youth & Adults

9am Sundays in the Fireside Room
In discussions led by our clergy, staff, and parishioners, together we will learn, reflect, discuss, and deepen our understanding of Christian faith.
Oct. 21: Rev. Craig Lemming, our assistant rector and volunteer chaplain of the Circle of the Beloved, the Minnesota chapter of the Episcopal Service Corps, speaks on the theme “Building the Beloved Community.”
Oct. 28: Jean Hansen, Director of Children, Youth, & Family Ministry, convenes a discussion of “Faith and Family Practices.”
Nov. 4: As the midterm elections near, parishioners Tisha Colton, Libby Snelson, Jamie Bents, and Gregory Torrence will share their perspectives on “Faith and Civic Responsibility.”
Nov. 11: Parishioner Richard Bryntesen speaks on “Awe, Joy, and Happiness”: Why do we often focus on disgust rather than awe? How is joy different from happiness, and how can we build happiness practices into our own lives?
Nov. 18: Parishioner the Rev. Ernie Ashcroft will speak on the Book of Common Prayer 1979 as a resource for faith.
Nov. 25: Professor of English Literature at Hamline University, Dr. Jermaine Singleton will discuss Baldwin’s nuanced exploration of the relationship between Christianity and African American communities through the prism of historical racial grievance, melancholy, resilience, and gender order. Attendees are strongly encouraged to read the novel before they attend the forum.

Unknowing and the Christian Life: Faith Formation series for Advent 2018

Faith, hope, and love abide, the apostle Paul wrote—but he didn’t mention certainty. While Advent is a season of hope, the Christian life is often a matter of living forward in hope, but without certainty. The Sunday morning forums this Advent address the theme of uncertainty as the atmosphere in which we regularly walk. Join us in the Fireside Room at 9am for these talks:
Dec. 2: Unknowing and Faith. Does faith mean imagining we’re certain when we’re not?  Dr. Mark McInroy of the University of St. Thomas leads a discussion of faithfulness in the absence of certainty.
Dec. 9: Unknowing and God.“We believe,” we proclaim every Sunday, but we confess things about God that we can’t demonstrate or prove. Dr. Paula Cooey of Macalester University leads a discussion of hope and the question of God.
Dec. 16: Unknowing and the Future. Advent is a season of hope—but different Christians seem to look forward to very different futures! The Rev. Terry DiNovo leads a discussion on different ways of understanding hope as we wait for God’s future.
Dec. 23: Unknowing and Christ. As we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s birth, we’re aware of lively questions about the significance of Jesus of Nazareth. Rector Rev. Jered Weber-Johnson leads a discussion of how we might negotiate those questions faithfully.
