Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols

Come Sunday, December 16 at 4pm for Scripture and seasonal music at the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols. A musical prelude begins at 3:30pm.

This traditional service following the King’s College liturgy will feature all St. John’s choirs conducted by Mr. Richard Gray, Director of Music, and accompanied by Dr. Sean Vogt, Choirmaster of The Cathedral of St. Paul (National Shrine of the Apostle Paul). All are welcome to attend the service and nursery care is available for ages birth-4 years old. A reception will follow.
The choral repertoire includes:

  • The Lord at First did Adam make (David Willcocks)
  • People, Look East (Malcolm Archer)
  • In the Bleak Midwinter (Gustav Holst)
  • Keep Your Lamps (André Thomas)
  • A Hymn to the Virgin (Benjamin Britten)
  • Torches (John Joubert)
  • E’en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come (Paul Manz)
  • Ding dong, merrily on high! (David Willcocks)

Congregational Hymns include:

  • Once in Royal David’s City
  • Angels We Have Heard on High
  • O Come All Ye Faithful
  • We Three Kings
  • Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

Whenever and wherever this lovely service is heard the basis of each service derives from the lessons, rather than the music. The main theme is the purpose of our Creator as seen through the lens and texts of scripture.
