by Richard Gray, Director of Music
Over the first weekend in September, members of our choir traveled north to Duluth for a time of music, fellowship, and renewal. We gathered at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, beginning with dinner together at Blackwood’s Grill before entering into the following day of rehearsal, reflection, prayer, and conversation on music and hospitality.
The people of St. Paul’s, along with their director Tom Hamilton, were wonderfully welcoming and provided coffee, lunch, and warm hospitality that made us feel right at home. We look forward to the chance to return the favor and host them next year.
Some of our group also joined a hike led by our rector, Jered, overlooking the beauty of Lake Superior. On Sunday, our retreat concluded with worship, as we lifted our voices together with the St. Paul’s Choir.

Choir member Jo Anna Hebberger said, “I really enjoyed just interacting in a casual way with the other choir members and getting to know them better. And doing the final service in that space was a treat. Also the service in the chapel and the discussion after. In other words, I really enjoyed the whole retreat!!”
We chose Duluth not only for its hospitality but also because of the love so many of us share for northern Minnesota. The retreat was meaningful, both musically and spiritually, and we returned home renewed and grateful for the time that was spent together.
