Lenten Devotional: John 5:1–18

by Jay Clark

Having spent my life living with OCD, I have given a lot of thought to rituals. While rituals often provide significant value, they can sometimes mistakenly become an end to themselves and inhibit and distract from actions that are necessary and good.

That is what I draw from today’s Gospel reading. If the ritual of no work on the Sabbath had been allowed to distract from the opportunity to help another then a wonderful thing would not have been attained. Jesus does heal in so many ways.

Mountain Mint – Pycnanthemum viriginianum

These photographs, shared each day during Lent, capture the beauty of plants native to the Upper Midwest. As we spend time in Lenten reflection, these images of new life can remind us daily of our calling to be caretakers of God’s Creation.
