Lenten Devotional: John 5:30–47

by Andrew Waldo

John the Baptist did know who Jesus was. Although he was a bright light himself—if rough-edged and sometimes harsh—John pointed toward a brighter and gentler light. But habit, unwillingness to change, and stubbornness got in the way for many who wouldn’t even look to see what John knew; or to whom he pointed. But catching even a glimpse, the pure, gentle light of Jesus shines through all that might obscure it.

What in me needs to be revealed by the light of Christ—and gladly set aside?

These photographs, shared each day during Lent, capture the beauty of plants native to the Upper Midwest. As we spend time in Lenten reflection, these images of new life can remind us daily of our calling to be caretakers of God’s Creation.
