Lenten Devotional: Matthew 21:33–43

by Dr. Judy Stack

This parable, like several in Matthew, is about being responsible with what is entrusted. In this case, Jesus is addressing (rather hyperbolically) the religious leaders of the time and prophetically calling them to account for not responsibly caring for the people. They have not produced the fruit of the thing that was entrusted to them.

What and who has God entrusted to you? What are you doing to faithfully cultivate its growth in becoming what God intends? How can Jesus—and his love and mercy for you and others—be the cornerstone of that cultivation?

These photographs, shared each day during Lent, capture the beauty of plants native to the Upper Midwest. As we spend time in Lenten reflection, these images of new life can remind us daily of our calling to be caretakers of God’s Creation.
