Sunday, November 3, we will have a concert performance of Requiem, Op. 48 by Gabriel Fauré at 4pm in the Church and on YouTube. It will be offered by St. John’s choir and the Artaria String Quartet, featuring soloists Jennifer Sylvester, soprano and Phill Takemura Sears, baritone.
Phill is also one of our staff singers and baritone section leaders. Read on to get to know him a little better and hear what he’s most excited about!
When and what was your first experience with the Faure Requiem like? This is my first Fauré Requiem and I have relished every moment.
What do you love most about the piece? It’s pleading meditation that shifts with the needs of those praying. That the vocal range for the baritone solo goes to no extremes is very intentional. It’s centered and reflective, and I get to soak that in.
What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming concert? Sharing this contemplative prayersong with the congregation and my fellow musicians.
