Lenten Devotional: Mark 12:28–34

by Chris Tegeler

Jesus tells us to love God and one another. In a country and world experiencing an epidemic of hatred, this can feel impossible. It is easy to love those who feel and believe as we do, but what about those who hate or disagree with us?

In another time of extreme hatred and fear Dr. Martin Luther King echoed and amplified Jesus’ message saying: “Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

May God give us the strength to drive out even our own hate with love.

These photographs, shared each day during Lent, capture the beauty of plants native to the Upper Midwest. As we spend time in Lenten reflection, these images of new life can remind us daily of our calling to be caretakers of God’s Creation.
