Swimming to the Rushes
As I moved through the water
I became half fish, half man.
My snorkel cut through its surface
Like the dorsal fin of a shark.
Once I reached the sanctuary of the rushes
I dove down and moved among them, through them, with them.
There I floated weightless and silent.
The fish at first were wary
But became curious and plentiful.
Above me the surface world
Seemed distant and other-worldly.
I rested in the stillness
For what seemed like an eternity.
I did not want to leave this sacred space
But eventually I surfaced and swam back to the beach.
As I rested there now fully human
I vowed to return to this oasis that had fed my soul.
