The Gift of the Kingdom: Growing With Our Youth

By Angela Strickland

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus’ scolding of the disciples serves as both a welcome and a reminder: “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

At St. John’s, we believe that when we make space for children, we aren’t just “helping the kids”; we are opening ourselves to a deeper, more-whole encounter with God. Through intergenerational ministry, the wisdom (and the despair) of the elder meets the wonder (and hope) of the child, and in that community, we encounter The Divine more clearly than we could alone.

A Place of Healing and Belonging

We recognize that for many in our pews, “the Church” hasn’t always felt like a safe or inclusive space. Some of us have come to St. John’s from faith traditions that were restrictive, judgemental, or even abusive. Others have come from backgrounds where laypeople did not feel qualified, or were never invited to participate in the spiritual formation of the community.

We want to say clearly: You belong here, and your hands are needed.

Reclaiming the joy of church community does take effort. Forming a vibrant environment for our youth requires a conscious and challenging commitment to creating “safe space.” There are many examples of how the greater church has failed in this regard. This is why we adhere strictly to Safe Church practices, providing environments with children with two or more unrelated, trained, encouraging adults for activities. These aren’t just administrative hurdles; they are a commitment to protecting each other with intention, which is vital in our chaotic world.

An Invitation to Transform

Working with our youth is a salve for old wounds and a way to forge new, healthy traditions. As we strive to walk together in politically and socially charged times, we invite you to walk alongside our children as they model the kingdom. It may be that their ministry to us is more transformative than our support of them.

During the month of May at the 10am service, you will be hearing from folks who hold various leadership roles in our Children, Youth, and Families ministries. Each week you will hear about a different opportunity to serve and grow through these ministries. If you are looking for ways to laugh, learn, mentor, or be the extra helper in the room, please contact Shelley Byrnes, Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministry or find our speakers at coffee hour. We will provide all necessary training; help you finish Safe Church training so you can serve alongside those already working to enrich the lives of our youth; and help you find a ministry that is a good fit.
