Meet New Member Sue Mercier

by Judy Stack

Sue grew up in the Twin Cities and went to the U of M for a degree in elementary education, specializing in reading difficulties. She moved to California to pursue her studies and met her husband at Vandenberg Air Force Base. When he was transferred to Greensboro, NC, she worked both teaching reading and at UNCG preparing other elementary teachers and supervising student teachers.

Fifty-five years later, she moved back to Minnesota to be near family and in December 2023 moved to Marvella in Highland. She remains passionate about teaching young people to read and has organized “Reading Buddies,” where members of the Marvella community support 2nd graders twice monthly as they improve their reading.

Sue came to St. John’s through checking out the online broadcasts of services of various churches in the Twin Cities. She appreciated the beauty and comfort of our services as well as the music. She came from a very small congregation in North Carolina and is still adjusting to a place as large and multifaceted as St. John’s.

Sue is looking for spiritual and religious growth and involvement at St John’s. She has volunteered to be an usher, a reader, and a chalice bearer.

Sue loves sports, especially football, and has once again become a Vikings fan! SKOL!
